Hungarian Parliament on the banks of the River Danube
We went to Hungary because our friends invited us to their wedding; it was a fantastic wedding with the reception being held at a hotel on the banks of the Danube; the setting was magical. You get to see some different traditions, the one that was very different. The groom must remove the bride’s garter by only being able to use his teeth. This caused much laughter, along with lots of comments, some of encouragement, and I am sure some were encouraging the groom to take advantage. They were being shouted to the groom as he set about removing the bride’s garter. You cannot see what else he may have got up to while the bride sits on a chair and the groom crawls under her wedding dress to remove the garter. The bride and groom looked thrilled, and it was a great day.
We spent two weeks checking out this country, mostly in Budapest and the surrounding area. The buildings are all well preserved, and the architecture is fantastic. The setting of the Parliament building on the banks of the Danube is, without doubt, stunning.
The tram service that runs through the centre of the city is very regular, with trams arriving every few minutes. The trams run along the centre of the road, making the road through the city a dual carriageway. This service is fast and clean. The people are friendly, very helpful and polite.
We also had to cross the river on a small four-car ferry, with no timetable. It just comes to pick you up when they see a few cars waiting to cross.
Some things are expensive, and the language would be difficult to learn. For me, I think it would be impossible. So not a place to move to because not a lot of English is spoken.
