Portuguese Parliament building facade in Lisbon, Portugal. Portugal was one of the countries hardest hit by the Eurozone crisis, yet in contrast to countries such as Greece and Spain, there has been no sharp rise in support for radical left or anti-establishment parties.
Portugal is a lovely country, with many nice old places to visit, and nice scenery to just sit and take in the sights. Just like in Spain, you have to get away from the coast so you are not amongst the hoards of tourists. However, not as many drunk British as there are in Spain.
On our last visit, my wife and I found the local Portuguese people had changed their approach to tourists. They were not friendly, not very helpful, and looked at you as a nuisance. Some of them do not even wish to serve you when you want to purchase products at their shops. They have become the only nationality in all the countries we have visited in Europe that have changed in not a good way.
This has happened over the last five or six years because they used to be gracious people. The way they are now would stop us from moving there to live, even if Portugal were not in the European Union.
